Starting with MEC’s first LEED certified building, Bryce Gauthier of Gauthier & Associates Landscape Architecture (G|ALA), has been designing stores for the company since 2006.
Since then, G|ALA has led the landscape and site design for multiple MEC projects including their flagship Vancouver store, MEC Head Office, and other new MEC retail stores across Western Canada.
The design gestures developed by Gauthier & Associates Landscape Architecture include: sandblasted paving patters; the use of large locally quarried stone; custom-designed bike racks; and native planting endemic to the stores’ regional landscape ecology.
These design gestures have become signature guidelines within which all new MEC retail stores are designed.
An immediate Vancouver icon, the MEC Headquarters is a next-generation green building that encourages employee health and drives innovation. Under MEC’s sustainability agenda and using innovative technology to minimize the environmental footprint, the Headquarters is designed to meet one of the world’s highest green standards, LEED Platinum.
Gauthier & Associates Landscape Architecture worked closely with Proscenium Architecture, MEC and the rest of the consultant team to deliver a project with a range of outdoor amenities including sustainable water management, extensive native landscaping, walking paths, custom seating, public art installations, and a rooftop patio with vegetable planters and fruit trees for staff and visitors.
